Baugruppe90 — English version below
Con la abundancia de productores y música disponible cuesta cada vez más encontrar nuevos nombres que a uno le peten la cabeza o, en otras palabras, le suenen a algo tremendamente conocido y, al mismo tiempo, tan fresco como si fuese la primera vez. Descubrí el dúo Baugruppe90 a raíz de su primer y reciente release en Sous Music, prestigioso sello que fundó Anja Schneider en su atrevida etapa post-Mobilee.
Entre el techno oldschool y un ensamblaje de géneros y sensibilidades, buscando la luz y melodías cálidas que nos alejan de la manida oscuridad, Baugruppe90 destacan por muchos motivos: tanto Louis como Paul llevaban varios años con sus proyectos personales en paralelo, ejerciendo de ghost producers e investigando sonidos nuevos y de otras décadas sin parar. Se conocieron hace unos cuatro años, como explican en la entrevista, y desde entonces hasta ahora han ido trabajando y mejorando hasta formar el dúo Baugruppe90 de forma natural, a raíz de su primer release en Sous Music.
Este es uno de sus primeros podcasts con el proyecto, y sin duda una ocasión privilegiada para descubrir dos de los artistas nacidos en los noventa que han llegado para quedarse, con respeto por el pasado pero con mucha actitud y ganas de innovar.

Baugruppe90: De la Nintendo DS y el house progresivo que inunda YouTube a forjar un dúo electrónico que renueva los cánones sin tapujos
Louis y Paul son Baugruppe90.
Paul: Nos gusta moldear nuestro sonido emulando el sonido de las cintas y su distorsión. De hecho, Louis se ha comprado una grabadora de cassette recientemente. Llevamos trabajando en esto unos ocho años y durante este tiempo hemos tenido también nuestros propios proyectos. Tanto a la hora de producir como de escuchar música, nunca hemos definido géneros ni compartimentos y por eso nos han llegado también proyectos de ghost producing para otros.
La primera vez que entré en contacto con la producción de música electrónica creo que fue a través de mi Nintendo DS. Tenía un tracker llamado Nitrotracker, programado por Tobias Weyand, en el que podías grabar incluso tus propios samples. Más allá de eso y hablando tanto por mí como por Paul, ambos pertenecemos a una generación de productores de música electrónica, y afortunadamente tenemos mucho intercambio y feedback con otra gente afín y, al mismo tiempo, aprendemos de los recursos infinitos que tiene internet.
Louis: Cuando entré en contacto con la música electrónica, en realidad quería ser Dj y no productor. Me compré una controladora trillada de Dj y pronto descubrí que me interesaba más la producción de la música en sí. Por aquel entonces no paraba de encontrar en YouTube contenidos y pistas mierdosas de FL Studio Remakes de Progressive House. Siempre me preguntaba cómo funcionarían todos aquellos botones del software, así que lo probé y tuve la suerte de encontrar ahí mi pasión. Al tiempo, hice el cambio a Ableton Live pero la pregunta de “¿Para qué servirán todos estos botones?” sigue presente en mi mente a día de doy. Por eso, siempre tengo curiosidad por nuevas técnicas y plugins.
Baugruppe90: el making off del dúo y el origen del nombre
Paul: Nos presentó un amigo en común hace unos cuatro años. Este amigo trajo a Louis a Hamburgo con la idea de hacer música durante un fin de semana. Por aquel entonces, solo nos apañamos para hacer un solo track. A lo largo de las semanas siguientes, hicimos varios tracks juntos, pero teníamos el conocido problema del productor, nos daba miedo lanzarnos por que sí, sin tener la conciencia tranquila y la certeza de que eran buenos tracks.
Nuestra amistad se consolidó e hizo más fuerte y en 2020 produjimos juntos el EP Kontur, durante primavera. En aquel momento no planeábamos lanzarlo como un proyecto de dúo (conjunto), pensamos que sería mejor hacerlo como colaboración entre nuestros alias individuales. En verano recibimos muy buen feedback que venía de varias direcciones, y empujados por el entusiasmos nos preguntamos: ¿”Por qué no empezar nuestro proyecto como dúo?”. En realidad, ya habíamos pensado en ello antes. Esta vez, sin embargo, lo sentíamos de manera diferente y nuestro gusto y conocimiento musical se habían acercado incluso más entre ambos. Durante largas noches le dimos vueltas y vueltas al tema del nombre- Estábamos los dos en Hesse, en casa de nuestros padres, y habíamos hablado largamente por teléfono acerca del nombre, hasta que de golpe dimos con BAUGRUPPE90 y lo vimos claro.
Louis: El término “Baugruppe” es alemán y se traduce como “un componente o un ensamblaje de múltiples partes”. Se usa principalmente en mecánica o ingeniería electrónica. Si se traduce literalmente sería algo así como “Grupo Constructor” (“Building Group” en inglés”), que tiene un significado totalmente distinto. Nos encanta el doble sentido del término y se puede conectar fácilmente. En el sentido de: Como proyecto conjunto construimos sonidos y canciones que crean un marco mayor cuando se combinan. Al mismo tiempo, queríamos añadir una cifra con la que ambos tuviéramos conexión. Al haber nacido los dos en los noventa rápidamente elegimos este número. Siguiendo en el mismo contexto, el 90 sería nuestro “año de construcción”.
Baugruppe90 en Sous Music: el primer lanzamiento por la puerta grande con el EP Kontur

Paul: El contacto con Anja vino de la mano de nuestro querido manager. Le enseñamos a Anja nuestra primera demo del EP y ella se obsesionó inmediatamente con nuestro trabajo y quiso saber más de nosotros. Desde ahí quedó claro que ella quería lanzar el EP en su sello. Posteriormente, Louis la conoció en persona en los Blackhead Studios de Berlín. Luego tuvimos un meeting con ella y nuestro amigo Paul, diseñador gráfico, para comentar el lanzamiento. Habíamos trabajado previamente un concepto visual para el EP con nuestros amigos de APNEA Studio, y cuando se lo enseñamos a Anja le flipó también. Esa misma semana fuimos de nuevo a Blackhead Studios y masterizamos el EP juntos con ella y el ingeniero de mástering Klas Lindblad. Fue un trato muy cercano y familiar con ella y su equipo y todo el mundo estuvo completamente involucrado con el trabajo.
Baugruppe90: del pueblo a las grandes ciudades alemanas (y sus escenas)
Louis: Paul vive en hamburgo y yo vivo en Berlín, pero ambos somos originarios de dos pueblos de Hesse, en Alemania. Obviamente, ahora tenemos cada uno grandes escenas de clubbing a tocar de casa, pero en nuestros pueblos de origen no había prácticamente nada. Siempre teníamos que viajar a grandes ciudades para ir de clubbing o a cualquier evento en general. Aunque tenemos que admitir que ninguno de los dos es especialmente clubber o fiestero. Personalmente, puedo contar con los dedos de dos manos las veces que he ido a un evento de música electrónica. No es que no me guste el clubbing o la fiesta, sino que cuando salgo me gusta ver al artista hacer un live. En este sentido, estos momentos son muy especiales y los recuerdo con mucha fuerza.
Baugruppe90: Los planes para 2021 (& beyond)
Louis: Tenemos mucha música nueva en el carril de salida y realmente no podemos esperar más para mostrar lo que hemos estado haciendo los últimos meses. Todo este proceso lo estamos viviendo de manera muy natural y nuestra creatividad fluye sin problema. Estamos descubriendo muy buena música del pasado que nos da mucha inspiración y energía. Y quiero puntualizar que no nos cerramos a ningún subgénero en particular sino que nos gusta todo el espectro del techno. Es realmente divertido sumergirse en los viejos tiempos y en sus subgéneros que eran populares en cada época. Nos sigue gustando experimentar y queremos tener la posibilidad de poder lanzar aleatoriamente, cuando nos apetezca, un track. Justamente lo hicimos este fin de año pasado, cuando lanzamos un bootleg de un tema del rapero sueco Ecco2k en nuestro Soundcloud. Quizás no es el tipo de sonido que esperarías tras nuestro release de Kontur, pero nos flipa el track y el vibe Eurodance que tiene. Cosas así mantienen el proyecto interesante y diverso.
Por supuesto, ambos estamos deseando que lleguen tiempos en los que las actuaciones en directo vuelvan a ser posibles y podamos actuar. Algunos dicen que hemos elegido el peor momento para comenzar un nuevo proyecto, pero nosotros no estamos de acuerdo con ello. Nos pareció el momento correcto y esto es lo que importa.

Baugruppe90: Ideas y actitud para afrontar la carrera artística (en plena era digital)
Louis: Si juzgo el pasado con acierto, creo que antes había mucha menos presión hacia el artista que anteriormente. Los fans piden mucho de los artistas, y tan pronto como el artista deja de estar activo durante unos días en las redes sociales, rápidamente se le declara como “muerto”. Ya sabes a lo que me refiero. Estamos intentando relajar un poco las cosas en este sentido. En nuestra opinión, la escena Techno puede dificultar mucho el acceso a nuevos artistas. Somos conscientes de ello y entendemos lo importante que es cuidar la escena que nos gusta, pero al mismo tiempo tampoco queremos obedecer todas las reglas no habladas que existen. Somos parte de una nueva generación más joven que creció con ordenadores y software en vez de hardware analógico. ¿Por qué no deberíamos poder usarlo? ¿Porque se supone que no es “algo real” o auténtico? Afrontémoslo, las nuevas tecnologías nos han ofrecido un incremento notable en la calidad y el acceso a las herramientas. Aunque a los dos nos encanta el hardware analógico y, ciertamente, estamos pillándole el gusto, no abandonaremos todas las herramientas digitales con las que hemos crecido. Continuaremos usando 20 EQs digitales en un kickdrum y pinchando MP3s en unos CDJ. Hagamos más música, juntémonos y compartamos el conocimiento en vez de criticarnos los unos a los otros por las herramientas que usamos.

Baugruppe90: From Nintendo DS and YouTube’s endless Progressive House playlists to shaping their own sound breaking the canons
I started the conversation with Paul and Louis asking about their sound, as its really particular even in their first release as Baugruppe90. How do they shape it? Did they have any previous influences? Here we go with their first answers and the rest of the conversation that flows by itself. Hope you enjoy as much as I did!
Paul: We like to shape our sound with tape emulation and distortion. ¡Louis even got himself an analog tape recorder now! Haha, all kidding aside. We've been doing it for a good 8 years now and had our own artist projects during that time. When producing music as well as listening to it, genres were never really defined for us and that's how ghost productions for others came about.
The first time I got in touch with electronic music production I think was with my Nintendo DS. On it I had a tracker called “Nitrotracker“ programmed by Tobias Weyand, with which you could even record your own samples. Besides that I can speak for both of us, when I say that we belong to the generation of electronic music producers, who fortunately have a lot of exchange with like-minded people and knowledge through the endless width of the internet.
Louis: When I had my first contacts with electronic music I actually wanted to be a DJ not a producer. Bought some wack ass DJ-Controller just to find out that I’m more interested in producing the music itself. At that time I found more & more of those shitty FL Studio Remakes of Progressive House Tunes from that time on YouTube. I always wondered what all those buttons in the software do, so I tried it out and I fortunately found my passion in it. Eventually, I switched to Ableton Live but the “what those buttons do?” mindset is still present to this day. I’m always curious about new techniques and plugins.
Baugruppe90: the duo’s making off and the origin of the aka
Paul: We were introduced to each other through a friend about 4 years ago. This friend brought Louis to Hamburg at some point with the plan to make music for the whole weekend. I think we only managed to make 1 track in total lol. The following weeks we made several tracks together, but we had the well-known producer problem not to release them in good conscience.
Our friendship has strengthened over time and in 2020 we produced the Kontur EP in spring. At that time we did not actually intend to release it as a duo project, we thought we’re gonna make this a simple collaboration between our single aliases. Then in the summer, as we got more and more positive feedback from all directions, we thought to ourselves "Why not start a duo project?” To be honest, we had this thought before. This time, however, everything felt different and our taste and understanding of music moved even closer together. For nights we racked our brains and thought about what to call ourselves. No influence or experience was left out in the naming process. Then we were both in Hesse at our parents place, we had wildly discussed on the phone about the name - suddenly it clicked and BAUGRUPPE90 stood firm.
Louis: The term “Baugruppe” is german and translates to something like a component or an assembly of multiple parts. It’s mostly referred to in mechanical or electrical engineering. If you translate it literally it would be “Building Group” which has a completely different meaning. We love the double meaning of it and can connect to both of them really well. In the sense of: We as a joint project are building sounds & tracks which are meant to create a bigger picture all combined together. At the time where we decided to use this term as our project name we also wanted to add a number to it that we both have a connection with. As we were both born in the 90s we quickly decided on this number. In that context, also making 90 our “construction year”.
Baugruppe90 & Sous Music: About their first release Kontur EP
Paul: The contact with Anja came from our beloved manager. He had shown Anja our first demo EP and she was immediately obsessed with it and wanted to know more about us. From there it was clear that she wanted to release the EP on her imprint. After Louis met her for the first time in Berlin at Blackhead Studios, another meeting with us, our graphic designer friend Paul and Anja followed to discuss the release. We had already worked out a visual concept for the EP with our friends from APNEA Studio, and when we presented it to Anja she was blown away. Later that week we went back to Blackhead Studios and mastered the EP together with her mastering engineer Klas Lindblad. It's a very familial interaction with her and her team and everyone was fully behind it.
Baugruppe90: from the town to the big german cities (and their superb electronic music scenes)
Louis: Paul lives in Hamburg and I am living in Berlin but we are both originally from two small villages in Hesse, Germany. Obviously, now we both have a big clubbing scene basically right next to the door but back then in our hometowns nothing was really going on. We always had to travel to the next bigger cities to go clubbing or see any event in general. But we gotta admit we both aren’t that big of a clubber or partygoer. Personally, I can count on the fingers on two hands the number of times I went to an electronic music event. It’s not that I don’t like partying but more that when I go to an event I really wanna see & enjoy that particular artist live. This way those moments are very special and therefore memorable for me.
Baugruppe90: 2021 plans (& beyond)
Louis: We do have a lot of new music in the pipeline and can’t wait to show you what we’ve been working on the past months. This whole projects really feels so natural and our creativity is flowing. We’re discovering so much good music from the past which gives us a lot of inspiration and energy. And I wanna point out that we are not limiting us to one particular subgenre inside of the whole Techno realm. It's just too much fun to dig into old times and their subgenres that were popular at the time. We still love to experiment to this day and at all times wanna be able to just randomly release a tune if we feel like it. We did so this New Years Eve when we released a Bootleg of a track from Swedish rapper Ecco2k on our soundcloud. It maybe wasn’t exactly the sound you would expect from us after the Kontur EP but we fucking love the song and the Eurodance vibe it has. Things like these are keeping it interesting and diverse.
Of course, we both are looking forward to a time where live gigs are possible again. Some people say we’ve chosen the worst time to start a new project but we don’t agree on that. It felt right and that’s what matters.

Baugruppe90: Ideas and attitude to face an artistic career (in the digital era)
Louis: L: If I judge the past correctly, I feel like there was far less pressure on the artist than nowadays. Fans demand a lot from artists and as soon as an artist is not active on Social Media for a few days, he is quickly declared as “dead". You get my point. We’re trying to loosen things up a bit. The Techno scene can be really gate-keeping for newer artists in our opinion. We’re aware of that and understand how important it is too care for the scene we all love but we also don’t wanna blindly obey every unspoken rule. We’re part of a new, younger generation that grew up with computers & software instead of analog hardware. Then why shouldn’t we use it? Cuz “it’s not the real thing”? Let’s face it, the new technologies brought a huge improvement in quality and accessibility of tools. While we both love analog hardware and are, admittedly, really getting the hang of it, we still couldn’t abandon all the digital tools we grew up with. We will continue using 20 digital EQs on a Kickdrum and play MP3s on CDJ’s. Let's make more music, come together and share knowledge instead of bashing each other and the tools we use.
